What do we see here? What does it look like? What could be hidden inside this sealed case? We can only speculate about that, although the abstract outline of this suitcase does give us an inkling.
Hidden Movement, as a suitcase, makes a space tangible. This sculpture does not seem to simply demarcate a space; the contours of the suitcase suggest a human figure that can make a movement inside.
What could be the movement and can you look away with suspicion then?
Recently, our collective values are being challenged and eroded by the larger system of populism, institutional racism and fascism. It is slowly encapsulating us, with small hidden steps, one small step at a time. In our recent history we have yet seen what can be the result of that, and that looking back we are left wondering how that was possible after all.
This image, with its signal red color, stands here before us as a tangible warning to always remain alert to what seems to be hidden; lest we look away. Eventually, everyone, All human beings*, will have to take a stand. Let us hope that we will then respond actively, not out of fear, but on the basis of renewed compassion.
